About Hokitika

Historic gold town

Hokitika is an historic seaside town on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Its colourful history and origins date from 1864 when it was the ‘rip roaring’ goldfields capital of Westland and important bustling river port. Today Hokitika is a friendly rural town with wide attractive streets and an inviting community for visitors.

We recommend a two night visit, if your time permits, as Hokitika is an ideal base for day trips exploring this beautiful and dramatic region.

A perfect place to break the journey

Hokitika is just over a three hour drive from Christchurch International Airport. It is also an excellent overnight stop on your South Island itinerary being approximately 5½ hours drive from Picton, Nelson, Kaikoura, Wanaka, Marahau and Akaroa.

Wonderful dining experiences

There are great choices for dining out in Hokitika. Next door to Teichelmann’s is the iconic and highly recommended French restaurant Café de Paris. Another popular choice is ‘Stumpers’ Café & Bar, just a short walk. Above the town on the Blue Spur terrace is award-winning Stations Inn restaurant with stunning sunset views. On Sunday nights the historic Royal Mail Hotel at Woodstock features live Country & Western music. Meals are good value and feature local produce and courtesy transport is provided. Fish & chips hot from their traditional paper wrapping or a specialty local pizza are popular on the beachfront at sunset.

Entertainment, arts & crafts

For movie buffs visit the quirky art house movie theatre Crooked Mile Talking Movies or historic ‘art deco’ Regent Theatre with its state of the art sound and 3D digital projection systems playing latest release movies daily.

Close to Teichelmann’s are many craft galleries where artists can be seen working in all mediums including local greenstone (jade) and gold.

After dark visit New Zealand’s largest collection of glow worms (outside of a cave system), and they’re free!!

Teichelmann’s B & B in Hokitika is ideally located to enjoy everything in Hokitika, without needing your car. Let us help you make the most of your time here, however long your stay.
